4/12/05

the bike partition’s silver birches  {waken me}

it’s spring again             (and i feel awake again}

            i could hardly see it coming

                                                                                                it was winter,     yesterday

                                                                                                      with buttoned up coats

                                                                                                            black, wool

                                                                                                                        puffy

                                                                                                               and brightly colored

                                                                                                        {like crayolas in a box}

                now the leaves are blooming

        –unrolling gently off the tips of trees

                                                            bright    tangy   green

                                                                        contrasting sharply

                                                                 with the     muted

                                                                                         businesslike

                                                                                                brown and greys

                                                                                            {old  Soviet colors,

                                                                                                                               leftover

                                                                                                                          from the Mao

                                                                                                                        Days…

                                                                                                            when

                                                                                           discussions with

                                                                                      what used to be Russia

                                                                                     were still good…            }

it felt like forever since i’ve seen something breathe

                 without the invisible  dust of      pollution

                                                                seep in

                                                            , or pervade,

                                                                             their lungs.

but the silver birches

lining the bike partition

don’t have lungs

and

though their white, papery bark

                                                                                      is filthy,

                                                                                    and filmed

                                                                                           with black

                                       soot.

                              [that rises from the

                                    iron piping

                                                of exhausts—

                                                                        as cars blare by—

                                      rising…

                                    and drifting

                             dis a pp  a ting  s of tl y

                                                                                                only to smack up against

                                                                                                       the formerly white

                                                                                                         tree-bark of blossoming

                                                                                      birches.]
